Every September, Sherwin Williams releases their color of the year. For 2021, the color of the year is SW 7408 Urbane Bronze. This beautiful color inspired by nature is a great fit for interior and exterior designs.

Urbane Bronze is a beautiful dark gray/brown color that is actually part of Sherwin Williams neutral color palette. Marketed as the “New Neutral” this is a very calming and refined color that has been growing in popularity over the past couple of years. As an exterior option, it can be used as a main or an accent color for trim, shutters or doors. This color complements natural stone or wood siding when finished in a light semi-transparent stain.

Siding Materials and Profiles

Whether your home has traditional lap siding, board and batten, shake/shingle or a shiplap profile, this color can be applied to a wide variety of siding materials including fiber cement, engineered wood, and natural wood. In order to get a clear understanding of what this color looks like close up, we have created samples on James Hardie cedamill, Allura and Nichiha fiber cement siding and LP SmartSide Engineered wood siding. We also applied the same color to natural wood beadboard spruce boards to show what an interior wall or porch ceiling board would appear.

Coordinating Colors:

When used on exterior siding products you can continue with the same color on the trim or choose a high contrasting trim color such as Extra White or an off-white color such as Shoji White. One way to see what the colors will look like on the exterior of a home is to use the Sherwin Williams SnapColor Visualizer which will give you a computer-generated image. However, keep in mind that the colors you see on your device (phone, tablet or desktop) may slightly vary. The best way to see the true color is to visit your local Sherwin Williams store for a color sample for testing purposes.

Light Reflecting Value (LRV)

One thing to take into account with darker exterior colors is the LRV (light reflecting value) number. Urbane Bronze has an LRV=8. The lower the number, the less the color is able to reflect sunlight which leads to the color absorbing light (and heat when used on the exterior). A true black color is going to have an LRV=0 while the truest white will have an LRV=100. Take this into consideration if your house is subject to direct sunlight (beach house or a lot without surrounding trees). If the house sees a fair amount of shade or is located in the mountains with limited sun exposure, this might be a great color selection.

Using Urbane Bronze for Interior Design

When selecting colors for the interior and exterior of your home, we suggest contacting an interior/exterior home designer. The use of a professional will allow you to mix and match colors and styles to create your dream home. A great online resource for interior design is Laura Rugh who is based out of Austin, Texas. She has an informative website where she reviews timeless and popular color trends. She even has a blog post Where To Use Urbane Bronze.

How to Get Custom Prefinished Siding and Trim

Fiber cement, engineered wood and natural wood siding and trim in custom colors such as Urbane Bronze is our specialty. Since we do not make products to stock, our colors are custom. This ensures you get a product that has just ben finished (no old stock sitting around) and ensures the job is consistent in color and sheen from the first to the last board. Before any order is sent to production we will create and send a color sample proof for you to review. Once approved, we move the order to the production department for custom finishing.

Lastly, please keep in mind that the colors you see on your computer, tablet or phone may not be the same as what I see so colors will vary from one device to another. A great way to see this color on the exterior of a home is to visit the Sherwin Williams ColorSnap visualizer to see what the color looks like on a computer rendered image. If you believe this is a color you really love, we recommended obtaining a physical sample of the color from your local Sherwin-Williams store so you can see it in person. If you are ready to order your new siding custom factory finished to this color or any other, we will create a color sample on the correct siding material for you to approve. Your signed approval will start the process.
